FRISCO, Tex --
The Frisco Thunder defense imposed a storm Saturday night as they struck down the San Angelo Stampede Express in a 63-44 season opening victory at the Deja Blue Arena.

While the offense had control of most of the second half, the defense took over in third quarter during a key 21-0 Frisco run then pitched a fourth quarter shutout.

"Our defensive strategy was just to come out and work hard, said defensive lineman LaMont Finely, who finished with two sacks. "Our coach prepares us everyday to be relentless and fight through, and that’s what got us through,"

Coach Troy Esprit’s preparation paid off as Finley recorded seven tackles in an effort that earned him Intense Football League defensive player of the week. Defensive back Michael Catchings had five tackles and two interceptions.

"The whole defense did good, and the offense did good. It was a great team victory," said Finley.

Yet, even with the win, Finley admitted the defensive end still had some kinks to work out before this Sunday’s game against the Katy Ruff Riders.

"There’s always things to improve on," Finley said. "We just have to let [Coach] bring it out and teach us through what needs to be done."

Esprit also confessed the Thunder "still has some things to iron out" before Sunday, but that "a victory’s a victory."
